Tutorial: Logbooks
Learn how to use logbooks to record actions
About Logbooks

In this tutorial, we will show you how to efficiently use logbooks. Logbooks are a freeform place to record administrative actions in order to keep track of changes made to your systems. You can use them to keep everyone on your team up to date on what you have changed and why.

How to Add a Logbook Entry

In the logbooks section of FrameFlow, click on "Actions" and select "Add Logbook Entry". This will open a window where you can begin writing your log.

Adding an Entry

The default status for your logbook entry is "new", but you can change it to whatever status matches your needs with the dropdown menu. Add a title with a brief description of the action you performed or plan to perform. You can also select a priority value between 1 and 10.

The date and time will be set to the time you created the log entry, but you can change them to reflect a past or future action. Enter your name or login account under "Entered By" and add any notes about the action you've performed in the text box at the bottom.

Once you've added your first logbook entry, it will show up in the list of all logbook entries. Logbooks are flexible and freeform, allowing you to use them for things like software updates, hardware updates, notes on how certain systems are performing, or whatever suits your needs. Once you have multiple logs potentially added by multiple administrators, the filtering function becomes very useful. You can filter your logbooks by any of the parameters below to find what you're looking for more easily.

Options by Which to Filter Logbooks

The search option for logbooks can be refined by multiple parameters. You can search by start and end date, type, user, and keywords that the title and text may contain. This feature is especially useful for generating a list of administrative actions that were performed in the past.

Associating a Logbook Entry with a Device or Monitor

To associate a logbook entry with a device or event monitor in particular, find the device or event monitor in question. The Actions tab will contain an option called "Add New Log Book Entry". From there, you can add a log as you did before. The new logbook entry will be associated with the device or event monitor you selected.

Associating an Entry with a Device

Click on a network device and select the logbooks section to see all logbook entries about that specific network device.
